Outward Bound is a trio from Crete island, Greece, existing since 2001 as a piano-guitar duet which expanded to its current trio form in 2007, after the addition of Yiannis Iliakis on the drums.
Antonis Tsikandilakis (b. 1979) from Heraklion, Crete, studied the piano under the guidance of Efi Agrafioti, upper theory of music under the tuition of Minas Alexiadis, Panayiotis Adam and Evaggelos Kokkoris, as well as contemporary music with the help of Sami Amiri. Although his main instrument is the piano, he also plays the drums and electric bass on various acts. Improvising characterizes his performances on the piano, from highly sensitive to cut-up atonal.
Dimitris Neonakis (b. 1981) from Heraklion, Crete, started playing electric guitar in local bands at the age of 14. At his 17 he moved to Athens and begun studying the guitar with Akis Tourkogiorgis and Makis Amplianitis. He has also been studying the Cretan lute for the last few years. His influences, apart from his teachers, include Giannis Spathas, John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler, Terje Rypdal and traditional musicians from Crete island.
Yiannis Iliakis (b. 1982) from Siteia, Crete, started playing the drums at the age of 14 in rock bands. In 2001, he started lessons in the Municipal Conservatory of Amarousion, Athens under Nikos Christopoulos. Now, he studies under Nikos Sidirokastritis in the Modern Music School of Athens. He has attended lessons and seminars under Simon Goubert, Y. Stavropoulos, Z. Pinakoulakis, Jojo Mayer, V. Karipis, G. Danis and many more. He is also a visual artist, graduated from the Athens' School of Fine Arts in 2006.
The trio is quite active in live performing in Heraklion and Athens. They have already participated in “Clinical Jazz” compilation, on Clinical Archives, in 2008. They have just finished recording material for their new album.
